On February 2, 2010, Sharon was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis. After weeks of treatment, there was no improvement and the words "liver transplant" became part of the discussions. The unthinkable became our reality and a liver transplant was the only option. We wondered, even questioned what God's plan was in this, but our prayer was that no matter the outcome, it would be ALL for God's glory.

The purpose of this blog is to record the journey...to recount God's faithfulness through trial and pain. A cry for mercy and healing for Sharon. A place where friends and family can come to get updates and specific prayer requests. Please feel free to comment and encourage our hearts.

Psalm 84:1-2 & 10-12

"How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord Almighty! My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.
Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere;I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked. For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless. LORD Almighty, blessed is the man who trusts in you".

Sharon Irene Nasca saw the face of Jesus at 12:16 am Thursday, March 25th...What a Glorious Day.

Wednesday, March 24, 2010

Psalm 73:25-26

"Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."

Wednesday, March 24, 2010

Today is difficult day for the Nasca family...a day that we hoped and prayed would not come. The doctors met with the family and shared the news that Sharon is too sick to handle a second liver transplant. The current liver is not functioning and her body is quickly failing. Machines are sustaining her. The family is making peace with the decision to take her off the machines and allow her to run into the arms of her Savior.

Please pray for Lou and the family...for peace to reign in our hearts and to focus on the joy set before Sharon.

Psalm 5:1-3

"Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my sighing. Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray. In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation."

Sunday, March 21, 2010

Unfortunately, after Sharon's surgery on Friday, the fluid and swelling have not decreased. Therefore, the doctors have given the family the difficult news that there is no other option but to assume the liver is not functioning properly. As of today, Sharon will be put back on the transplant list and will need to go through the surgery a second time when and if an acceptable liver becomes available.

Please pray for a liver to become available. Please pray for divine strength for Sharon to sustain a second surgery. Please pray for Lou to lay all his fears, thoughts, and desires at the foot of the cross.

Psalm 13:5-6

"But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, for he has been good to me."

Friday, March 19, 2010

Oh how good the Lord is to answer prayer. The surgery was able to happen today. The doctors were able to go back in and remove the clot. Sharon was strong through the entire 4 hours of surgery. The doctors were very encouraged that they were able to do everything they had hoped to accomplish.

Please pray that a significant decrease in fluids is necessary....a healthy sign that the problem has been corrected.

Psalm 18:16-19

"He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me. They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the Lord was my support. He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me."

Friday, March 19, 2010

At 12:30 am, doctors did find a clot in one of her veins close to the liver! Praise God for an answer! However, Sharon's body is weak and critical. Her temperature and blood pressure began to drop, and she started having difficulty breathing. Doctors concluded she could not handle any further treatment. They had to stop the procedure and attempt to re-stabilize her body. If they feel she is stable enough, they will take her back to surgery today to remove the clot.

Psalm 9:9-10

"The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you."

Doctors did not find anything out of the ordinary yesterday. However, after several meetings and consultaion with a team of doctors, the liver transplant team will take Sharon back into surgery today to again attempt to find the reason that is causing her to not retain fluids.

Oh, Lord how they need your wisdom....please provide abundantly.

Psalm 3:3-6

"But you are a shield around me, O Lord; you bestow glory on me and lift up my head. To the Lord I cry aloud, and he answers me from his holy hill. I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me. I will not fear the tens of thousands drawn up against me on every side."

Swelling in Sharon's body has been caused by the surgery, but more so by the fluids that have been necessary to be given to her. Because doctors have not been able to close the incision, she continues to leak fluids...they continue to replenish fluids with outside sources. The vicious circle of more fluids causes excessive swelling....therefore, doctors have not been able to close the incision. Doctors are continuing to follow this closely and are becoming more concerned there may be something they are missing.

Today, an exploratory surgery will happen where the team of doctors will go in and look around to see if they see anything that may be causing the fluids not to flow properly.

Please continue to pray for wisdom for doctors and strength for Sharon.

Psalm 10:17

"You hear, O Lord, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry, defending the oppressed."

Tuesday, March 16, 2010

The doctors continue to be concerned with the loss of fluids that Sharon is loosing. They believe there must be some sort of blockage or veins may be too thin around the liver area. An exploratory surgery will take place today to check.

Psalm 46:1-5

"God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at the break of day."

The family was awaken this morning to hear that Sharon would be going in for the second part of the liver transplant surgery today. After about three hours, the doctors informed us that the surgery went well...the liver transplant was complete! They still were not able to close her body, due to the swelling, but hope to be able to do that within the next several days.

The doctor informed us that it was a "risky move", but feels cautiously optimistic.

Psalm 103:1-5

"Praise the Lord, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits-who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagles."

Saturday, March 13, 2010

We start the day with some concern over Sharon's white blood count. It appears high, which most likely means infection. Doctors increased her antibiotic dosage and will watch and wait.

There was also a concern with fluid around the heart, but after an EKG, it appears they are not alarmed.

Our fears are plenty...but we put our hope and trust in the One who heals and saves.

Psalm 33:20-22

"We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and sheild. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. May your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord, even as we put our hope in you."

Over the next few days, the high dosage of sedation is reduced in hope that they will see Sharon's natural reflexes respond. Because of the amount of time she has been sedated and the high dose, there is some concern that the brain would stop responding to reflexes. On Friday afternoon, we were told that she responded to the "gag" reflex and a pin-prick in her foot. A encouraging sign that her reflexes are working and active. Praise God for each babystep.

Sharon remains very swollen from the fluids she has been given. It appears to be a very delicate balance between needing to continue to provide fluids to keep her blood pressure stable and waiting for her swelling to decrease so the second part of the liver transplant surgery can be done.

The doctors have communicated that they are hoping for Monday to finish the surgery.

Strength will rise as we wait upon our Lord.

Psalm 150:6

"Let everything that has breath praise the Lord."

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

The liver continues to show full function. Sharon's body has produced three times as much urine as yesterday and bile is being made much more rapid as well. We thank God for HIS grace and mercy. Sharon's vitals continue to strengthen, her lungs, heart and blood pressure are all strong. Sharon has a breathing tube for precaution only. A feeding tube has also been put in to begin giving her nourishment.

We are so thankful for the machines that are sustaining her, the wisdom and care of the doctors and nurses, and for the Lord that loves this sweet, precious woman with an everlasting love.

Psalm 130:5

"I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I put my hope."

Tuesday, March 9, 2010

By the time we got to the hospital the next morning, Sharon was already back in surgery. However, the second part of the surgery did not happen today. Doctors cleaned and removed packing from bleeding and decided it was best to wait until swelling was down and Sharon was more stabalized.

Sharon remains in a very deep sedated sleep. We wait nervously for the next step, but trust God for HIS perfect timing and care for Sharon.

Psalm 121:4

"He who watches over you will neither slumber nor sleep." ~Psalm 121:4

Monday, March 8, 2010

Through the early morning hours of Monday, doctors were gravely concerned that internal bleeding was not stopping. Doctors were contemplating taking Sharon back to surgery to attempt to stop the bleeding, when suddenly the blood began to clot. The doctors told Lou the next morning how close they were to loosing Sharon the night before. The presence of the Lord was obvious. God continued to show mercy to Sharon and our family.

Later that same day, the liver began to show some function. It was slowly producing bile and urine. Doctors reassured us that sometimes a transplanted liver can be slow to begin functioning. As the day went on, the liver began to fully function and doctors hoped to finish the second part of the surgery on Tuesday.

Psalm 23:4 (Beginning)

"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,I will fear no evil, for You are with me"

Sunday, March 7, 2010

Sunday morning around 10:00am, Sharon was able to call Lou from the hospital to tell him that an acceptable liver was available. The operation would take place at 1:00pm. Praise God, their oldest daughter, Susan, had just arrived the night before from Dallas, so she was able to comfort Lou during the surgery. Sharon's mindset was full of faith and peace. She jokingly asked the doctors if they got enough sleep the night before.

The surgery was to take 6-10 hours, so we began the difficult process of waiting. Four and a half hours into surgery, the doctors assured us that the liver was in and all was going well. But, an hour and a half later, the doctor came down to tell us that things had not gone as well as hoped. The liver was not functioning and they immediately stopped the operation. The doctor gave us three scenarios. The first, the liver would start functioning on its own. Second, another transplant would be necessary. Or our worst fear, we would lose her.

Once again, we had to leave it in God's hands, where it always had been.
